Not long ago, I was a divorced single parent with a six-month old baby, working a part-time job as a bank teller. I was earning less than I would be collecting welfare and had very little savings. My assets were about $7000.00 in mutual funds in an RRSP, and a 2nd hand car. I had very little financial knowledge and a grade 12 education.
Determined to change my circumstances, I took action by going back to school, thinking that a university degree would grant me a passport to a well-paying and satisfying career. While I picked up some valuable transferable skills, I soon realized that a university education and even a well-paid job were not going to cut it. If I wanted to support my family, build wealth and live with integrity doing what I loved, I was going to have to build my financial and investment knowledge. In 2003, I found a creative way to buy my first house with no money down and live mortgage-payment free while I was still a student.
Within a few months of graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree, I landed a six-figure job where I worked from 7am to 6pm each day. It was incredibly stressful and I hated it. My family life and health suffered immensely, and on top of it, the taxman was gouging me. This was not the life I wanted. I realized I would have to take much more of an active role in becoming financially literate and getting myself out of the rat race.
I finally started to get pro-active. I took the remaining valuable time I did have each day and started reading books, attending seminars and talking to business-people and other high net worth individuals about what they invested in - and found out that it wasn't in mutual funds, but rather in private business (their own or other people's) and in real estate projects. I learned about "good debt" and "bad debt", saving strategies and where to find, research and buy solid Exempt Market investments.
In 2008, I was able to quit my job and launch my own corporation specializing in finding and promoting high-quality Exempt Market investment opportunities. I eliminated my consumer debt, learned to manage my money effectively, and found opportunities to invest in successful private deals and Exempt Market Investments that have provided both security and consistent returns.
Today, as a licensed Dealing Representative of Pennant Capital Partners Inc. (Pennant) I help individuals and couples to learn about and participate in similar investment opportunities. I enjoy a balanced life that started with becoming financially literate and taking charge of my own financial well being, and I love helping others do the same.
